The future of the Merino industry is looking bright from where the Badgingarra-based Challara Merino and Poll Merino stud is standing. Stud principals Ron, Deanna, Peter
and Emma Wilkinson believe they are breeding the type of Merino sheep now
in high demand from the commercial producer.
Decisions made several years ago to source genetics that would lead to a plain bodied, heavy cutting, easy care Merino sheep, sees them well placed to meet current industry demands. Over the past seven years the Wilkinsons have been muscle scanning and have focused on developing a more worm resistant flock, while at the same time not sacrificing their soft rolling skin (SRS) wool characteristics. …
